Pailles Goal Puts Bruins On Verge Of East Finals

NEW YORK It took 40 years for Original Six rivals Boston and New York to face off again in the playoffs.

Beantown s Bruins seem intent on wrapping up the long awaited get together in a hurry.

Daniel Paille scored the tiebreaking goal with 3 31 left in the third period after defenseman Johnny Boychuk got the Bruins even earlier in the frame and Boston put the Rangers on the brink of elimination with a 2 1 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night.

Boston leads the series 3 0 and can advance to the conference finals as early as Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Only three NHL teams have rallied from an 0 3 hole to advance.

However the Philadelphia Flyers did it to the Bruins in 2010 in this round.

We can talk about it all we want but that s in the past Bruins coach Claude Julien said. We had to live with that and we still have to live with that.

Boston also nearly blew a 3 1 series edge in the opening round this year against Toronto before rallying from a three goal deficit in the third period and capturing Game 7 in overtime.

The Toronto series I didn t think our team was in the zone the way it is right now Julien said. I anticipate knowing my team that we re going to come out the same next game and certainly not be the Jekyll and Hyde team that we were in the first round.

The Bruins trailed 1 0 heading into the third but Boychuk tied it with his fourth of the playoffs after he netted just one in 44 regular season games. The Rangers hadn t lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4 2010.

Boston thought it had grabbed the lead seconds before Paille scored when a shot deflected off the mask of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist popped up in the air and landed on the goal line. Lundqvist couldn t find it before Paille swooped in from behind the net and poked in the puck.

I thought we played a pretty strong game Lundqvist said but we came up short again and it definitely hurts.

Taylor Pyatt had made it 1 0 in the second period for the Rangers who were outscored 8 4 in two losses at Boston to begin the series. New York had won nine straight at home including three in the playoffs against Washington in the first round.

Lundqvist was sharp until the third period and finished with 32 saves. He bounced back well after an uncharacteristic performance in which he allowed five goals in the Game 2 loss.

You have to be pretty happy with the situation right now said Tuukka Rask who made 23 saves for Boston. We were really happy with our effort I think this was our best defensive effort in a long long time. So we just have to stay calm keep playing our style of hockey and good things will happen.

New York s task is now most difficult. The Rangers were already trying to become the first NHL team to ever rebound from 0 2 holes to win consecutive series.

You can t look at it as you have to win four games Lundqvist said. You just have to focus on the next one. The season is on the line so you have to leave everything out there.

We definitely have to give everything right now mentally and physically and put it out there on Thursday.

The Rangers again couldn t get their power play untracked failing in both of their chances and dropping to 0 for 10 in the series. New York has only two power play goals in 38 opportunities during these playoffs.

Boychuk was credited with the tying goal after the puck appeared to deflect into the net off Rangers defenseman John Moore.

The game turned rougher moments later when New York forward Chris Kreider was struck under his visor by the stick of Boston s Tyler Seguin who was following through on a shot just inside the blue line. Seguin was then clipped in the exchange by the stick of Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger.

Shortly after Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron had a cut over his eye that left his white jersey bloodstained. No penalties were called on any of the plays.

New York took just its second lead of the series 3 53 into the second period when Pyatt deflected in a shot by defenseman Ryan McDonagh that was fired from the blue line.

Lundqvist shined in the second making a pad stop on Seguin 6 1 2 minutes in stretching across to knock away a drive by rookie defenseman Torey Krug who scored in each of the first two games of the series and then bringing the crowd to its feet with a lunging glove snare of Gregory Campbell s slap shot from the left circle with 8 24 remaining.

That got the Bruins even in shots (15 15) before they outshot New York 8 1 the rest of the second.

The Rangers got off to a sluggish start after losing the opening faceoff and didn t mount any kind of early surge fueled by the excited home crowd. New York didn t carry the puck into the Boston end until 1 35 had elapsed.

You have to be proud of your team Julien said. The Rangers hadn t lost here in a long time and they were extremely confident. You saw them come out with that confidence. I thought they were a much better team than they had been in Boston.

We had to face that and we had to be better.

The Rangers picked up their play and built a 6 1 edge in shots including scoring opportunities on Rask. New York earned the first power play of the night however it was as ineffective as it has been throughout the postseason.

The tide turned back to the Bruins favor just before the midway point in the period starting with a partial breakaway after New York turned over the puck at the Boston blue line. Chris Kelly raced ahead with the puck and was stopped in tight by Lundqvist when he tried a backhanded shot.

Shawn Thornton was also denied when he came in alone on Lundqvist with 8 46 left in the period and Jaromir Jagr couldn t score either when he got a pair of whacks at the puck that the New York goalie turned aside.

The Bruins surge gave them an 8 7 edge in shots but Boston finished the period trailing 11 9.

We were down but we weren t playing that poorly Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said of the team s third period mindset. We needed to stay aggressive try to tie the game. We just wanted to get pucks to the net. We did that and we were rewarded.

Cleveland Cavaliers win 2013 NBA draft lottery

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and son Nick smile after winning the 2013 NBA draft lottery.(Photo Jason DeCrow AP)

Nick Gilbert has his swagger back.

The Cleveland Cavaliers owner's son who has a nerve disorder has struck the lottery again. And the Cavaliers will pick first overall in the 2013 NBA draft on June 27 after winning the NBA draft lottery Tuesday in New York. This will be the third time in 11 years the Cavaliers pick first.

It's huge for us Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said immediately after the pick. For us it's about the city of Cleveland and giving them more hope as we build the franchise to the level we want to go to.

CONSPIRACY The 5 biggest NBA theories

TOP PICK Did Nerlens Noel get his wish

The Orlando Magic who had the best shot at landing the selection came in second in the lottery which gives every team that did not make the NBA playoffs odds based on regular season records. The Magic will take the No. 2 pick despite their 25% shot at the first pick compared to the Cavaliers' 15.6% odds.

The real surprise came when the Washington Wizards were selected third. The Wizards were slotted eighth but leaped five spots because of the lottery. The Wizards also picked third last season and the player they took was their representative.

We were projected to be in the eighth spot Wizards guard Bradley Beal said. The ball fell in our court and it is great to have the third pick in this draft.

The Cavaliers now have many options. This draft remarkably balanced with at least four players considered potential top picks. Cleveland has its franchise player in All Star point guard Kyrie Irving the top pick in 2011 but could use help at several other positions.

Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Kansas shooting guard Ben McLemore are considered the favorites for the pick but Cleveland's biggest weakness last season was at small forward the position of Georgetown's Otto Porter.

This isn't a draft where there's a clear cut obvious no holds barred No. 1 choice Dan Gilbert said in a teleconference. Obviously we're going to have workouts between now and the draft. I don't think there's a direction that franchise is leaning.

UNLUCKY Bobcats better off without top pick

Nick Gilbert was the Cavaliers' representative for the lottery for the third consecutive year. And he's 2 for 3 in getting the first overall pick.

Nick Gilbert has the nerve disorder neurofibromatosis which causes tumors to grow in his body. He has become a rallying point for the draft lottery in recent years.

The excitement on his face that was something special Dan Gilbert said. That was probably my favorite part of this process.

The Cavaliers previously selected first overall in 2003 when they drafted LeBron James. When he left in 2010 for the Miami Heat the franchise was devastated. Two top picks in three years since helps.

It's been a long three years for the franchise but we've come through it Gilbert said. We said all along that we're going to build this primarily through the draft. We wanted to focus on getting a handful of really strong people ... and build the franchise around them.

Next Xbox Will Face New Array of Rivals

The company on Tuesday introduced the new version of its Xbox video game console. The Xbox has been one of Microsoft s few undeniable consumer hits of the last decade a product that was not just a credible entry into the games business but also a sign of the innovation possible at a company that is rarely seen as an inventive thinker.

I think of Xbox as the accidental success out of Microsoft said James McQuivey an analyst at Forrester Research who added that the connection Microsoft has formed with the players of its current Xbox is much deeper than any relationship Microsoft has ever achieved before.

The new console the Xbox One will enter a market very different from the one its predecessor the Xbox 360 entered nearly eight years ago when there was no iPad smartphones had keyboards and mobile gaming devices were primitive at best.

Today video games can be played almost anywhere on any device with the biggest possible audience of online friends and without the aid of a costly gaming console.

The last year or two has been bumpy for Microsoft s consumer efforts. The Windows 8 operating system software and the Surface tablet computing devices got a tepid reception from the public when they went on sale last fall.

The company s mobile phone efforts have been largely ignored. And even Bing Microsoft s Internet search engine has failed to close a wide gap with Google the market leader.

Microsoft though could see better results with the Xbox. With it it hopes it can reassert the living room as the place where people can still get the best gaming experience complete with eye popping graphics and innovative methods for controlling games. It is also a place where Microsoft s technology can be at the center of a home entertainment system and the funnel through which people gain access to online video.

Microsoft has sold more than 76 million of the device s current incarnation the Xbox 360 worldwide compared with almost 100 million Wii consoles from Nintendo and more than 70 million PlayStation 3s from Sony.

The company also controls what may be the most valuable asset in console gaming Xbox Live a subscription based online service with 48 million members who use it to play games against one another and watch movies.

You can do a lot of things on the phone and a lot of things on tablets said John Taylor an analyst at Arcadia Investment. But he said you can t do the same kinds of things on those devices that you can on a television screen.

Microsoft plans to develop its own original live action television series which will be accessible through the Xbox. The series will be made in partnership with the director Steven Spielberg and will be based on the popular Halo video game franchise.

The company is also working with the National Football League to develop an app for Xbox that lets players interact with their fantasy football teams while watching a live game.

In an interview Don A. Mattrick the president of Microsoft s interactive entertainment business said that he recognized the growing appeal of mobile devices for gaming and that Microsoft would aggressively tie smartphones and tablets into the experience of using its console. He became most animated when talking about the possibilities of the new Xbox for providers of video programming.

We re going to the take the form from a one way experience pushed through a straw to where you can communicate back and make it interactive Mr. Mattrick said.

Even if it is a wild success the new Xbox is likely to have a bigger impact on consumer perception than it will on Microsoft s overall sales. The Xbox remains a small slice of the company s business which is still dominated by sales of Windows Office and other software. The company s games division represented only 4 percent of its operating profit.

At an event in a carnival tent on its corporate campus Microsoft did not say how much the new system would cost or how publishing partners would charge for games which typically start at around $60 for high end game consoles.

A major feature of the new Xbox which is expected to hit store shelves in time for the holiday season will be a new generation of Kinect the camera based motion control sensor introduced several years ago as an Xbox 360 accessory. The new Kinect will come with every Xbox One.

Traditional retail sales of games have come under pressure in recent years as mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad have invaded their turf with free and low cost games. While many gamers dismiss those offerings as inferior to console games the games have nevertheless tapped into a huge audience of players who may never have played on an Xbox or Sony s PlayStation.

The games business could use a jolt. Total United States retail sales of game hardware and software fell 25 percent to $495.2 million in April from $657.5 million a year earlier according to estimates by NPD Group a research firm. That figure does not include the sale of downloadable content over the Internet.

Alex St. John an entrepreneur who worked on Microsoft s pre Xbox game efforts says he is pessimistic about prospects for gaming consoles.

They re coming out with the latest and greatest stone tool Mr. St. John said. The new console that trumps the old console is called the Apple iPad. This generation of kids loves mobile games.

New Xbox and PS4 meet Call of Duty Ghosts

Editor's note John Gaudiosi is co founder and editor in chief of Gamerhub.tv video syndication network. He's covered video games for hundreds of outlets over the past 20 years and specializes in the convergence of Hollywood and games.

(CNN) While the gaming world is focused on the new Xbox One from Microsoft Activision is deploying its most popular franchise Call of Duty for its first assault on the next generation of consoles.

Developer Infinity Ward has designed new game engine technology to take advantage of Sony's PlayStation 4 and the new Microsoft console both due by year's end. Its Call of Duty Ghosts will come to PC Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers this November 5 with next gen release dates coming later.

In a recent interview in Los Angeles Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg showed off what next generation gaming will mean within the new Call of Duty game. Rather than continuing the Modern Warfare storyline the development studio decided to start from scratch with a new story and new characters.

Ghosts sets players in an alternate future America that's been crippled by a government in disarray. The Ghosts are remnants of the various branches of the Special Forces. They've adopted the best fighting techniques from these branches as they battle across an array of terrains and environments.

Also new to the franchise is an interactive dog which the developers created with the latest performance capture technology. The dog promises to be a loyal and important companion throughout the game's campaign.

This being a Call of Duty game there will also be new multiplayer gameplay to entice players to log in and take on friends from around the world on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Call of Duty Ghosts adds dynamic maps including natural events such as floods and earthquakes and player activated obstacles such as doors and explosive traps.

We sat down with Hirshberg to talk about what opportunities next gen consoles will open up for gamers. Here's an edited version of our interview

CNN What will define what next generation gaming is this fall

Hirshberg It's interesting. If you look into what's happened in culture not just in gaming but overall in culture over the last seven years that this current gen has represented the way that we communicate the way that we consume entertainment the way that we connect socially through digital spheres has completely transformed during that exact time period.

The current gen games like Call of Duty had something to do with that. They were the tip of the sword. Playing multiplayer in Call of Duty is probably one of the first mass things that people did together in a digital environment. Now we do almost everything together in a digital environment. All of those ways to connect with the devices in your pockets and being able to comment on everything categorize everything and rank everything hasn't really made its way into gaming yet.

We were ahead of the curve a little bit with Call of Duty Elite which we came out with to try to create a more social experience. One of the things you're going to see with next gen is that with Elite we were working around the current gen limitations in order to make a meaningful connection to the game itself. We had to find our way through an obstacle course technologically to make that happen.

Next gen is being designed with that in mind. There's really a baked in connectivity to the next gen hardware the way it's being conceived that I think will create many more opportunities for social connectivity surrounding video games.

CNN What will that mean to the community of Call of Duty gamers out there

Hirshberg We're seeing 40 million people a month playing Call of Duty. Six million people played today. This is 175 days after the launch of the last game. Anything that that many people do and care about usually there's a whole ecosystem of content to service their interest in that hobby.

They don't just watch a football game. They have a fantasy sports league. They have their favorite highlight shows. They have blogs that they read. They have statistics that they view online. They're connecting with that thing on multiple devices multiple times a day seven days a week not just when there's a football game on.

With gaming it's pretty much either you're playing the game or you're not playing the game and I think that with next gen you're going to see that ecosystem spread to different devices different times a day with a lot more supportive entertainment content for our franchises.

CNN When you look at past transitions to new consoles the focus has been on improved visual fidelity.

Hirshberg You're going to see that too. But to be fair last time it wasn't just graphical fidelity. It was the introduction of connected machines. It was the introduction of multiplayer through Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Games like Call of Duty took that and ran with it and there's a certain amount of humility we all need to have.

No one will see the future exactly accurately but the creation of those connected networks with the last generation of hardware created an explosion of new games with multiplayer and that's become the primary way people are spending their hours gaming. Next gen is always a combination of hardware design and ... what developers and creative minds do with that hardware. I'm just looking at the main differences and theorizing that that's where you're going to see an explosion of new creativity.

CNN What role do you feel Call of Duty will play in enticing gamers to upgrade to next gen

Hirshberg The game needs to be great but when you have a brand of the scale of Call of Duty that's so popular and so massive that it has the capacity to be one of the things that people really want to see. If you look at the last console transition the top franchises were the ones that bridged the gap between the last gen and the current gen and I think that will happen again.

We can't take that for granted and assume that people will show up just because it's a Call of Duty. It has to be a major game and it has to be demonstrative and emblematic of everything that the next gen is capable of and that's why we're putting this level of investment against it.

That's why we're not taking the easy route in doing a sequel to Modern Warfare. That's why we're opening up the franchise and removing the restrictions and doing all new characters and an all new world and taking a whole new approach to the game. We want to set the standard for the next gen.

CNN What are the challenges when it comes to this transition Call of Duty Ghosts is also coming out on next gen but the majority of gamers will be playing on current generation of consoles.

Hirshberg One of the decisions we made early on which was not a simple decision but we think it was the right one is that we have the same exact team developing the game for the current gen as is developing for the next gen. Some publishers have a lead developer doing the next gen game and then some outsourcing for the current gen.

We felt like it was really important to deliver what I think will be the best current gen Call of Duty ever because that game's going to benefit from all of the new thinking and all of the new ideas that are going into the next gen.

Some of the things from a technological standpoint won't be executable on the current gen like the Sub D and the texture mapping and that stuff but all of the gameplay ideas like dynamic maps character customization the new story the new world the current gen will be the beneficiary of all of those new ideas. I think it's going to be the best current gen game we've ever made.

CNN Traditionally with new hardware comes lower price points for current gen. How much life there is in the current gen systems moving forward given that PlayStation 2 had a very long tail

Hirshberg I try to not predict these things. What I know is we're going to have great games on every platform wherever our audience is. This has been Activision's philosophy for a long time. We've always been platform agnostic.

Wherever there are gamers that want to have a great experience we're going to have a great Call of Duty game for them we're going to have a great Skylanders game for them.

Even if the next gen is off to the races on Day One there will still be a lot of people who either are waiting to see or saving their money and who aren't going to dive in right away and we want them to have a great experience too.

Xbox One Microsoft unveils new console that changes everything

Microsoft revealed a new Xbox console on Tuesday that not only integrates TV internet and gaming but also will measure your heartbeat and recognise your voice.

The company said the Xbox One will revolutionise its users' lifestyles by integrating the cloud voice control and gesture technology into a simple intuitive machine.

It changes everything Marc Whitten an Xbox executive told a packed hall of technology journalists at the company's campus in Redmond Washington. This is rocket science stuff.

Analysts who had wondered whether the company could follow up on the success of its Xbox 360 first unveiled in 2005 said its successor offered a complete entertainment system designed for the family not just gamers.

The Xbox One really looks to advance the state of video game technology and entertainment in a way that we haven't seen before said Brian Blau a director of Gartner Research.

The Xbox One is a real advancement one that will transform the way we experience TV games music movies and more. From what we can see so far Microsoft has met and far exceeded expectations for the Xbox One. This is Microsoft branching out into the living room to reach more of a family audience rather than a core gaming audience.

Fred Huet a managing partner at Greenwich Consulting said Microsoft had thrown down the gauntlet to Sony's PlayStation and other rivals. The Xbox One is set to mark the beginning of a new generation of games TV and entertainment.

The Xbox One which will be available from the end of the year will be powered by 300 000 servers more than the entire world's computing power in 1999 said Whitten.

An improved ultra sensitive Kinect sensor will track wrist and shoulder rotations and be able to read users' heartbeats. This is human control for a human experience. Its main camera can record 1080P RGB video at 30 frames per second.

Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi wowed the audience by calling out commands and using minimal hand gestures to manipulate content on the Xbox One. He said a new set of universal gestures to control your TV would banish the fumbling confusion many feel with existing remotes. TechCruch called it a massive massive upgrade from the original model.

A snap mode similar to Microsoft Windows 8 experience allows users to run two activities such as watching TV and browsing the internet or using Skype simultaneously. It offers a second screen.

The Xbox One has 8GB of Ram along with a Blu ray drive 64 bit architecture and a 500GB onboard hard drive. Microsoft also unveiled a new version of its camera based Kinect system with better motion and voice detection. It showed how users can watch live sports on TV while getting updates on fantasy leagues on a split screen. In an effort to stay ahead of rivals Microsoft said new content for the popular Call of Duty game can be downloaded on the Xbox One before any other system.

Microsoft said more games would be shown at next month's E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.

The previous model the Xbox 360 was launched eight years ago and has been the leading games console for the past two years.

Vast Oklahoma Tornado Kills at Least 51

The injured flooded into hospitals and the authorities said many people remained trapped even as rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris clogged streets to the devastated suburb of Moore where much of the damage occurred.

Amy Elliott the spokeswoman for the Oklahoma City medical examiner said at least 91 people had died including the children and officials said that toll was likely to climb. Hospitals reported at least 145 people injured 70 of them children.

Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore was reduced to a pile of twisted metal and toppled walls. Rescue workers were able to pull several children from the rubble but on Monday evening crews were still struggling to cut through fallen beams and clear debris amid reports that dozens of students were trapped. At Briarwood Elementary School in Oklahoma City on the border with Moore cars were thrown through the facade and the roof was torn off.

Numerous neighborhoods were completely leveled Sgt. Gary Knight of the Oklahoma City Police Department said by telephone. Neighborhoods just wiped clean.

He said debris and damage to roadways along with heavy traffic were hindering emergency responders as they raced to the affected areas.

A spokeswoman for the mayor s office in Moore said emergency workers were struggling to assess the damage.

Please send us your prayers she said.

Brooke Cayot a spokeswoman for Integris Southwest Medical Center in Oklahoma City said 58 patients had come in by about 9 p.m. An additional 85 were being treated at Oklahoma University Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

They ve been coming in minute by minute Ms. Cayot said.

The tornado touched down at 2 56 p.m. 16 minutes after the first warning went out and traveled for 20 miles said Keli Pirtle a spokeswoman for the National Weather Service in Norman Okla. It was on the ground for 40 minutes she said. It struck the town of Newcastle and traveled about 10 miles to Moore a populous suburb of Oklahoma City.

Ms. Pirtle said preliminary data suggested that it was a Category 4 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita scale which measures tornado strength on a scale of 0 to 5. A definitive assessment will not be available until Tuesday she said.

Moore was the scene of another huge tornado in May 1999 in which winds reached record speeds of 302 m.p.h. and experts said severe weather was common in the region this time of year.

But the region has rarely had a tornado as big and as powerful as the one on Monday.

Television on Monday showed destruction spread over a vast area with blocks upon blocks of homes and businesses destroyed. Residents some partly clothed and apparently caught by sur prise were shown picking through rubble. Several structures were on fire and cars had been tossed around flipped over and stacked on top of each other. Kelcy Trowbridge her husband and their three young children piled into their neighbor s cellar just outside of Moore and hud dled together for about five minutes wrapped under a blanket as the tornado screamed above them debris smashing against the cellar door.

They emerged to find their home flattened and the family car resting upside down a few houses away. Ms. Trowbridge s husband rushed toward what was left of their home and began sifting through the debris then stopped and told her to call the police.

He had found the body of a little girl about 2 or 3 years old she said.

He knew she was already gone Ms. Trowbridge said. When the police got there he just bawled.

She said My neighborhood is gone. It s flattened. Demolished. The street is gone. The next block over it s in pieces.

Nick Oxford reported from Moore and Michael Schwirtz from New York. Leslie Metzger and Kathleen Johnson contributed reporting from Norman Okla. and Dan Frosch from Denver.

Before Tumblr Founder Made Mom Proud. He Quit School.

But instead of trying to pry him away from his machine or coaxing him outside to get some fresh air his mother Barbara Ackerman had another solution she suggested that he drop out of high school to be home schooled.

I saw him at school all day and absorbed all night into his computer said Ms. Ackerman reached by phone Monday afternoon. It became very clear that David needed the space to live his passion. Which was computers. All things computers.

Clearly.

Now 26 years old Mr. Karp never finished high school or enrolled in college. Instead he played a significant role in several technology start ups before founding Tumblr the popular blogging service that agreed to be sold to Yahoo for $1.1 billion this week. With an expected $250 million from the deal Mr. Karp joins a tiny circle of 20 something entrepreneurs hoodie wearing characters like Facebook s Mark Zuckerberg and Foursquare s Dennis Crowley who have struck it rich before turning 30.

When I first met David he was 20 years old and wearing sneakers and jeans said Bijan Sabet a general partner at Spark Capital who was one of the first people to invest in Tumblr. But I knew he was one of these rare entrepreneurs that grew up on the Web and who could come up with an idea build it himself and then ship it that night.

Since founding Tumblr six years ago Mr. Karp has been admired for his programming skills and Web site design acumen but at times has been a polarizing figure in New York tech circles because he so often blogged about his personal life and party hopping. He has popped up in the New York Post s Page Six Magazine and has been a recurring target for the gossip Web site Gawker where he was labeled a fameball a derogatory term for someone who has an unquenchable desire for fame.

Tall and willowy with a mop of brown hair and piercing blue eyes Mr. Karp typically dresses in jeans a T shirt and sneakers. He speaks at a rapid clip and often for minutes without stopping. Technically he never graduated from high school which he cracked in an interview is hopefully not a condition of Yahoo employment.

After dropping out and working for a time in small New York tech outfits Mr. Karp made his way to Tokyo where he worked for several months for a start up. He returned to the United States and became the chief technology officer for UrbanBaby an Internet message board for parents. CNET Networks bought UrbanBaby in 2006 and Mr. Karp took the several hundred thousand dollars he made from the sale to start his own company called Davidville. One of Davidville s projects was a simple blogging service called Tumblr.

Mr. Karp s run at Tumblr has not been without problems. He had trouble hiring in Tumblr s early days unsure how to even interview recruits. He often thought large companies were too big for their own good proclaiming he could manage Tumblr with a team of four.

But Mr. Karp stepped out of the party scene and started dating his current girlfriend a graduate nursing school student at New York University four years ago. He also appeared to get more serious about his company as it grew from less than a dozen employees to more than 175 today. David has grown up in Tumblr said Mark Coatney who oversees Tumblr s relationship with media companies.

Still Mr. Karp s unsure footing led to discussions about his taking a different role at Tumblr according to two people who worked with the company and who agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity. Because revenue was not growing as fast as they would have liked investors considered putting Mr. Karp in charge of Tumblr s product development and finding a more seasoned chief executive.

Mr. Karp denied in an interview that there was a plan for him to give up the chief executive s job. He said that when Tumblr s chief operating officer left in the middle of last year filling that job and other critical roles like head of marketing was top of mind but he said there was no plan for him to step aside.

Like many who run so called social Internet companies Mr. Karp can teeter on reclusive. In an interview last year at the F.ounders conference in New York he said he preferred to come to the office early to work alone avoiding other people.

Where I feel the most productive and engaged is when I m buried in code buried in some project tweaking some designs he said. I m certainly introverted.

Nicole Perlroth and Michael J. de la Merced contributed reporting.

What you should know about Tumblr

(CNN) Yahoo's purchase of hot blogging platform Tumblr which it announced Monday was big news for the hundreds of millions of folks who already post to the site or check in to follow those who do.

But the $1.1 billion buyout will also no doubt introduce Tumblr to lots of folks not yet wholly familiar with it even if their Web searches for viral memes and cute kittens have already landed them there unawares.

So here are some facts you need to know about Tumblr (which in the grand tradition of Web startups everywhere shed its e early on).

It's big and getting bigger

Founded in 2007 Tumblr has stayed hot on a Web that can be unforgiving once it decides you're yesterday's news.

While its numbers aren't comparable to social networking giants like Facebook they're certainly enough to put hundreds of millions more eyeballs on the ads Yahoo serves up as its bread and butter.

Let's face it when the White House signs up for an account you know you're onto something.

To wit (according to the company)

Number of Tumblr blogs 105 million

Monthly visitors 300 million

Posts per second 900

New signups every day 120 000

It loves an animated GIF

If there was a ground zero for the rebirth of the Web's beloved video loops it was Tumblr.

Once relegated to the scrap heap of Web culture (we miss you Peanut Butter Jelly Time) the past couple of years have reminded us of an enduring truth It's fun to watch a cute duck a bouncy Olympian or bros watching basketball over and over and over again.

Tumblr's quick visual friendly publishing platform is perfect for GIFs. Nobody expects a 10 000 word essay. Make us laugh and all is well.

Oh and how did Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer choose to make the big announcement On her own Tumblr. With an animated GIF.

They've figured out mobile

Our society is becoming a mobile one and increasingly phones and tablets are the preferred portals for people to access the Web.

For example more people now access Facebook via mobile than on the traditional Web (a fact the site has had to aggressively address to stay relevant and make stockholders happy).

5 questions answered about Facebook Home

But while some desktop titans are having to adjust Tumblr is already living comfortably in that mobile world.

More than half of Tumblr's 300 million users access it with its mobile app and that crowd does so an average of seven times a day.

There's kind of a lot of porn

Shocker there's porn on the Internet.

But while most any corner of the Web that allows user posts is bound to have its share of naughty bits Tumblr has become a go to spot for adult entertainment industry types and amateur smut lovers alike. (The company of course doesn't say what percentage of its site is adult content but a recent analysis puts it at over 11 percent.)

And the site doesn't really shy away from that fact acknowledging as much in its community guidelines.

Tumblr is home to millions of readers and bloggers from a variety of locations cultures and backgrounds with different points of view concerning adult oriented content the entry reads asking users only to make sure to identify such pages as NSFW ( not safe for work ) and of course not to post anything illegal.

That's all well and good for an edgy startup but could be an issue that needs to be tackled as Yahoo aims to appeal to as many advertisers as possible.

In the meantime just make sure you look for those four letters when searching the site.

It's cool

For a few years nobody's really been sure what Yahoo is other than a place where an aging user base gets its e mail and looks at a few news stories.

Tumblr is Mayer's bid to get young and hip and it's not a bad bet.

From Sh t My Dad Says to Reasons My Son Is Crying the most buzzed about blogs of the past few years have tended to originate at Tumblr.

Whether its Kim Jong Il Looking at Things or White Men Wearing Google Glass fun and a little bit edgy isn't hard to find on the site.

I'm the luckiest guy in the world Weezy declared to the live crowd at the end of the performance adding All dat a as he pointed to Minaj's famous derriere.

The outspoken singer was the only one of four judges not to perform at the American Idol finale on FOX last week which she attributed to her commitment to perform at the Billboard Music Awards broadcast by ABC.

I wasn't allowed to perform on Idol and Billboard she told reporters in a press conference last week.

Fellow American Idol judge Randy Jackson confirmed his decision to leave the show after 12 years earlier this month and Minaj's rival Mariah Carey will likely not be returning due to her planned brand new world tour later this year. Minaj will also likely be on her way out.

It's safe to say Minaj isn't coming back to Idol an insider told Us of her ties to the franchise. She's okay with it. She had a great time but was only going to do one season anyway.

Chase Sapphire Commercial

If you have seen the Chase commercial and thought the song felt familiar you were right. As in 50 years of music familiar yep that is indeed, Sir Paul McCarthy.

Thousands run and party in Bay to Breakers

(05 19) 11 44 PDT Tens of thousands of runners and revelers took part in the 102nd Bay to Breakers race Sunday under clear skies and the watchful eyes of an expanded police presence.

From elite Ethiopian distance runners to people dressed as hot dogs nearly 30 000 registered participants and many other unofficial entrants took off from Howard and Main streets heading 7.46 miles to a fog free Ocean Beach.

The first competitor to cross the finish line was 23 year old Tolossa Gedefa Fufi of Ethiopia with a time of 35 01 the slowest winning time since 2003 and only the second time since 1984 that a winner took longer than 35 minutes to finish. Ryan Hall 30 who was trying to be the first American to win the race since 1986 finished second in 35 40.

The winner of the women's race was Diane Nukuri Johnson 28 of Burundi. She crossed the line in 40 12 a scant two seconds in front of 27 year old Adrienne Herzog of the Netherlands.

Some elite runners blamed this year's slower pace on a change in the course which required more turns in Golden Gate Park toward the end. But Nukuri Johnson running the race for the second time said the alteration didn't lessen her enjoyment.

I love it. I'm definitely more relaxed when I come here she said of the wacky race. It's fun to meet the (non elites) too all the people in costumes. But at the same time we're here to compete.

As always though the Breakers was less about the race than the party.

Alcohol was officially banned but that didn't stop Sean Afshar 21 of Berkeley who paused at the corner of Howard and New Montgomery Street with three friends to mix Smirnoff vodka with orange juice.

Was he worried about the alcohol ban

You know they say that every year Afshar said. But you can say that Sean Afshar says go for it

On the dreaded Hayes Street Hill Jimi Paschal 50 and her friends eased the pain of aching calves by blasting DJ music flipping burgers and handing out free Jell O shots to passersby. A crowd of at least 100 swirled around the house.

The crew spent almost $1 000 this year on their party including $400 on food and nearly as much on Mardi Gras beads to toss on runners. Their bash is now a 12 year tradition.

When we first started this we had to beg people to come. Now we're turning them away said Renee James another organizer.

David Minor stood outside his house on the hill spraying water over the heads of the revelers. He's done it for the last nine races.

I don't do it for the serious runners since I don't want to distract them but I turn it on right after they go by Minor said. It cools everyone down as they're climbing this big hill.

Even authorities got in on the fun.

One American Medical Response paramedic broke company rules and rigged his ambulance to blast Daft Punk's Get Lucky from the vehicle's PA system.

You know sometimes you just gotta keep the people happy the paramedic said as revelers whooped hollered and danced around him.

He preferred to keep his identity to himself.

A larger than usual police force also stood guard throughout the route extra vigilant after the April 15 bombing of the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 260.

Large backpacks were banned for the first time this year. Police were taking no chances even the elite runners had their belongings checked and officers on the police scanner were heard looking for someone in a gorilla suit who had abandoned a pack near the start of the race.

The race announcer asked runners at the starting line to be just as vigilant Remember If you see something say something. And please use the 1 000 Porta Potties along the route.

Meanwhile a seemingly endless flow of racers continued to pour through city streets though the number of registered runners was down slightly from last year.

Michael Costa 53 sipped his Starbucks coffee downtown and watched the costumed runners trot by.

I actually drove 9 1/2 hours from Palm Springs to see this Costa said. Just basically to see the spectacle and do S.F. for a week.

Peter Weir came from even farther away. The 50 year old Australian marveled at the diversity of San Francisco as he leaned on a railing near Moscone Center where his wife was participating in the American Psychiatric Association conference.

Gazing at a pack of tutu ed revelers he declared It's fantastic.

Miles to the west runners who had completed the race stopped to take photos. Some made a right turn into Golden Gate Park while others brought the party to the beach.

Down at the breakers where temperatures were in the 60s the beach was packed. More than one naked runner further communed with nature by dipping their feet in the surf.

Along the Great Highway were lines for bathrooms and T shirts. By far the longest was the ID check for a 21 and over wrist band.

You cross the finish line get your free coconut water and walk a few more steps and voila you're drinking beer in the middle of the Great Highway beside decorative shrubs and potted palms.

The place was packed by midmorning but quickly thinned out as the party moved to Golden Gate Park or back home for a hot bath.

Eurovision Song Contest 2013

Eurovision is the pop show from another dimension a big production international extravaganza celebrating the unifying force music at its most trite.

It is the show where nations set aside their differences and pretend to care about what passes for pop in Belarus glory in the shared values of simple chord sequences and singalong melodies and thrill to the realisation that blow dried windswept hair looks exactly the same from the valleys of Wales to the furthest reaches of the Georgia. But 26 songs is a lot for anyone to get through in one sitting a double albums worth of power ballads techno folk and cheesy europop.

Under the circumstances staging is often more significant than the song since even if you can t remember the chorus of the anonymous Ukranian ballad you re never going to forget the giant in a Viking suit who carried the singer on.

If only he d have stayed on to add backing vocals do a dance routine and exit with the vocalist slung over his shoulder we d all be tuning into the concert in Kiev next year. As it was they were narrowly seen off by Denmark s tin whistle.

It seems an appropriate symbol for a year that may well be remembered as the austerity Eurovision. A lot of countries seem to have decided that the appropriate response to the dismal economic climate was understatement. France opened proceedings with a dirty little left field pop rock ballad delivered by a scruffy blonde whose idea of choreography was to jerk about like a mime artist experiencing a nervous breakdown. I actually quite liked her.

The Netherlands were even more audaciously restrained sending an actual singer songwriter who warbled a kind of wayward Sondheim meets Joni Mitchell orchestral ballad about a bird who can t fly with the casual flair of a beatnik poet in the backroom of a coffee house.

Italy sent a scruffy bearded guy in a suit with no band no backing vocalists no contortionists dancers dry ice or lights. They might be in worse economic shape than they re letting on.

There were actually a lot of young men with beards affecting that scruffy slob in a suit look as if they didn t really care whether they won or not until cameras caught them screeching and sobbing waiting for votes to come in.

Only Finland and Belarus really gave it the full Eurovision cartoon blondes hunky dancers and lots of uh oh a ding dong lyrics. Seventeen of 26 finalists chose to perform in a language bearing a vague resemblance to English only with more vowels and less sense. Germany gave us Glorious or to pronounce it as the singer did Glo oh oh oh oh oh oh orious .

Lithuania s scruffy guy Andrius Pojavis had the best Eurovision lyric of the night It becomes untrue because of my shoes I m wearing today one is called love the other is pain . No me neither.

As for Bonnie Tyler well what can you say Every Eurovision performance needs a gimmick and Bonnie opted for Botox. If she had any more injected she could have bounced on as a perfectly smooth and spherical ball of skin and hair. She may be 61 and her song may be a by the numbers power ballad written by a team of American hacks but she has that cheese grater soul voice that can make even the most throwaway lyric sound like a matter of life and death.

She came she sang and she rose up on a platform with wind blowing through her hair smiling like a superstar who was convinced no one would dare give her nul points. It made little difference to established voting patterns. Maybe next year we should send a pop singer not as close to retirement age. Or tanks.

Denmarks de Forest wins Eurovision contest

Denmark's Emmelie de Forest has won this year's Eurovision song contest with her ethno inspired flute and drum tune 'Only Teardrops'.

Juries and television viewers across Europe awarded the barefoot de Forest for the catchy love song that is driven by her deep vocals.

Farid Mammadov of Azerbaijan finished second with the song 'Hold Me' ahead of Ukraine's Zlata Ognevich with 'Gravity' in third place. Two semifinals this week whittled down the contestants from 40 to 26.

Millions of viewers worldwide tuned in to watch weird and wonderful acts battle to win the contest as flag bearers entered on stage to a special hymn by pop icon ABBA's song writing duo.

Welcome to Sweden and my hometown Malmo said Zlatan Ibrahimovic the Paris Saint Germain striker and Sweden star in a video clip opening the event on Saturday.

Hostess Petre Mede was greeted by an audience of 11 000 in an arena in the third largest city of Sweden the homeland of disco greats and 1974 Eurovision winners ABBA.

ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus penned the special Eurovision anthem for this year with Swedish DJ and producer Avicii.

Singers from 26 countries took to the stage and an estimated 120 million viewers watched the kitsch but much loved pan European contest.

'Landslide' leader

Sanjay Jiandani from the esctoday.com told Al Jazeera that the Eurovision dedicated entertainment website was running a poll ahead of the winner being announced.

Finland's Krista Siegfrids sang gay marriage anthem Marry Me Reuters

He said the ethno inspired flute and drum tune Only Teardrops by Emmelie De Forest of Denmark had been leading by a landslide.

Denmark had also been the bookmakers' favourite to win this year's extravaganza which also featured a bizarre opera pop number from Romania and an Armenian rock song written by a guitarist from heavy metal band Black Sabbath.

Before the results were announced De Forest said I think we have a really good song that can take us far but let's see anything can happen.

Gay kisses

Europe's cultural differences have come to the fore this year after show rehearsals in socially liberal Sweden showed not one but two gay kisses.

Turkish observers said that might have been the reason for public broadcaster TRT dropping the event this week.

TRT cited low ratings as the reason for the cancellation because Turkey did not field a Eurovision candidate this year.

Two male Swedish folk dancers were seen kissing each other as part of an intermission act during rehearsals on Friday.

Finland's Krista Siegfrids did the same with one of her female dancers when singing gay marriage anthem Marry Me.

The fact is that Finland is the only country in the Nordic countries where gay marriage is not allowed and I think that's wrong Siegfrids said.

It's 2013 now and ... I can kiss anyone I want to. It shouldn't be a problem.''

'United Europe'

Carl Bildt Sweden's foreign minister who was in Malmo to watch the competition on Saturday said that Eurovision was a unique event that united Europe.

We see the old Yugoslavia now independent states after a decade of war they always vote for each other in Eurovision Bildt said. That I think is fun.

This year's competition sees the return to the international stage of two seasoned European stars.

Total Eclipse of the Heart' singer Bonnie Tyler is representing Britain with Believe In Me' while Anouk whose song Nobody's Wife' was a big hit in Europe in the 1990s is singing the song Birds''for The Netherlands.

Sweden has scaled back costs for the event this year to $23mn a large drop from last year's lavish competition hosted by oil rich Azerbaijan in its capital Baku which cost $1bn.

We have attempted to host Eurovision with less money to show that it is possible to do this without it being too painful for the host country '' Jan Erik Westman a spokesman of host broadcaster SVT said._
