Pailles Goal Puts Bruins On Verge Of East Finals

NEW YORK It took 40 years for Original Six rivals Boston and New York to face off again in the playoffs.

Beantown s Bruins seem intent on wrapping up the long awaited get together in a hurry.

Daniel Paille scored the tiebreaking goal with 3 31 left in the third period after defenseman Johnny Boychuk got the Bruins even earlier in the frame and Boston put the Rangers on the brink of elimination with a 2 1 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday night.

Boston leads the series 3 0 and can advance to the conference finals as early as Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Only three NHL teams have rallied from an 0 3 hole to advance.

However the Philadelphia Flyers did it to the Bruins in 2010 in this round.

We can talk about it all we want but that s in the past Bruins coach Claude Julien said. We had to live with that and we still have to live with that.

Boston also nearly blew a 3 1 series edge in the opening round this year against Toronto before rallying from a three goal deficit in the third period and capturing Game 7 in overtime.

The Toronto series I didn t think our team was in the zone the way it is right now Julien said. I anticipate knowing my team that we re going to come out the same next game and certainly not be the Jekyll and Hyde team that we were in the first round.

The Bruins trailed 1 0 heading into the third but Boychuk tied it with his fourth of the playoffs after he netted just one in 44 regular season games. The Rangers hadn t lost in regulation when leading after two periods since Feb. 4 2010.

Boston thought it had grabbed the lead seconds before Paille scored when a shot deflected off the mask of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist popped up in the air and landed on the goal line. Lundqvist couldn t find it before Paille swooped in from behind the net and poked in the puck.

I thought we played a pretty strong game Lundqvist said but we came up short again and it definitely hurts.

Taylor Pyatt had made it 1 0 in the second period for the Rangers who were outscored 8 4 in two losses at Boston to begin the series. New York had won nine straight at home including three in the playoffs against Washington in the first round.

Lundqvist was sharp until the third period and finished with 32 saves. He bounced back well after an uncharacteristic performance in which he allowed five goals in the Game 2 loss.

You have to be pretty happy with the situation right now said Tuukka Rask who made 23 saves for Boston. We were really happy with our effort I think this was our best defensive effort in a long long time. So we just have to stay calm keep playing our style of hockey and good things will happen.

New York s task is now most difficult. The Rangers were already trying to become the first NHL team to ever rebound from 0 2 holes to win consecutive series.

You can t look at it as you have to win four games Lundqvist said. You just have to focus on the next one. The season is on the line so you have to leave everything out there.

We definitely have to give everything right now mentally and physically and put it out there on Thursday.

The Rangers again couldn t get their power play untracked failing in both of their chances and dropping to 0 for 10 in the series. New York has only two power play goals in 38 opportunities during these playoffs.

Boychuk was credited with the tying goal after the puck appeared to deflect into the net off Rangers defenseman John Moore.

The game turned rougher moments later when New York forward Chris Kreider was struck under his visor by the stick of Boston s Tyler Seguin who was following through on a shot just inside the blue line. Seguin was then clipped in the exchange by the stick of Rangers defenseman Steve Eminger.

Shortly after Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron had a cut over his eye that left his white jersey bloodstained. No penalties were called on any of the plays.

New York took just its second lead of the series 3 53 into the second period when Pyatt deflected in a shot by defenseman Ryan McDonagh that was fired from the blue line.

Lundqvist shined in the second making a pad stop on Seguin 6 1 2 minutes in stretching across to knock away a drive by rookie defenseman Torey Krug who scored in each of the first two games of the series and then bringing the crowd to its feet with a lunging glove snare of Gregory Campbell s slap shot from the left circle with 8 24 remaining.

That got the Bruins even in shots (15 15) before they outshot New York 8 1 the rest of the second.

The Rangers got off to a sluggish start after losing the opening faceoff and didn t mount any kind of early surge fueled by the excited home crowd. New York didn t carry the puck into the Boston end until 1 35 had elapsed.

You have to be proud of your team Julien said. The Rangers hadn t lost here in a long time and they were extremely confident. You saw them come out with that confidence. I thought they were a much better team than they had been in Boston.

We had to face that and we had to be better.

The Rangers picked up their play and built a 6 1 edge in shots including scoring opportunities on Rask. New York earned the first power play of the night however it was as ineffective as it has been throughout the postseason.

The tide turned back to the Bruins favor just before the midway point in the period starting with a partial breakaway after New York turned over the puck at the Boston blue line. Chris Kelly raced ahead with the puck and was stopped in tight by Lundqvist when he tried a backhanded shot.

Shawn Thornton was also denied when he came in alone on Lundqvist with 8 46 left in the period and Jaromir Jagr couldn t score either when he got a pair of whacks at the puck that the New York goalie turned aside.

The Bruins surge gave them an 8 7 edge in shots but Boston finished the period trailing 11 9.

We were down but we weren t playing that poorly Bruins captain Zdeno Chara said of the team s third period mindset. We needed to stay aggressive try to tie the game. We just wanted to get pucks to the net. We did that and we were rewarded.

Cleveland Cavaliers win 2013 NBA draft lottery

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and son Nick smile after winning the 2013 NBA draft lottery.(Photo Jason DeCrow AP)

Nick Gilbert has his swagger back.

The Cleveland Cavaliers owner's son who has a nerve disorder has struck the lottery again. And the Cavaliers will pick first overall in the 2013 NBA draft on June 27 after winning the NBA draft lottery Tuesday in New York. This will be the third time in 11 years the Cavaliers pick first.

It's huge for us Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said immediately after the pick. For us it's about the city of Cleveland and giving them more hope as we build the franchise to the level we want to go to.

CONSPIRACY The 5 biggest NBA theories

TOP PICK Did Nerlens Noel get his wish

The Orlando Magic who had the best shot at landing the selection came in second in the lottery which gives every team that did not make the NBA playoffs odds based on regular season records. The Magic will take the No. 2 pick despite their 25% shot at the first pick compared to the Cavaliers' 15.6% odds.

The real surprise came when the Washington Wizards were selected third. The Wizards were slotted eighth but leaped five spots because of the lottery. The Wizards also picked third last season and the player they took was their representative.

We were projected to be in the eighth spot Wizards guard Bradley Beal said. The ball fell in our court and it is great to have the third pick in this draft.

The Cavaliers now have many options. This draft remarkably balanced with at least four players considered potential top picks. Cleveland has its franchise player in All Star point guard Kyrie Irving the top pick in 2011 but could use help at several other positions.

Kentucky center Nerlens Noel and Kansas shooting guard Ben McLemore are considered the favorites for the pick but Cleveland's biggest weakness last season was at small forward the position of Georgetown's Otto Porter.

This isn't a draft where there's a clear cut obvious no holds barred No. 1 choice Dan Gilbert said in a teleconference. Obviously we're going to have workouts between now and the draft. I don't think there's a direction that franchise is leaning.

UNLUCKY Bobcats better off without top pick

Nick Gilbert was the Cavaliers' representative for the lottery for the third consecutive year. And he's 2 for 3 in getting the first overall pick.

Nick Gilbert has the nerve disorder neurofibromatosis which causes tumors to grow in his body. He has become a rallying point for the draft lottery in recent years.

The excitement on his face that was something special Dan Gilbert said. That was probably my favorite part of this process.

The Cavaliers previously selected first overall in 2003 when they drafted LeBron James. When he left in 2010 for the Miami Heat the franchise was devastated. Two top picks in three years since helps.

It's been a long three years for the franchise but we've come through it Gilbert said. We said all along that we're going to build this primarily through the draft. We wanted to focus on getting a handful of really strong people ... and build the franchise around them.

Next Xbox Will Face New Array of Rivals

The company on Tuesday introduced the new version of its Xbox video game console. The Xbox has been one of Microsoft s few undeniable consumer hits of the last decade a product that was not just a credible entry into the games business but also a sign of the innovation possible at a company that is rarely seen as an inventive thinker.

I think of Xbox as the accidental success out of Microsoft said James McQuivey an analyst at Forrester Research who added that the connection Microsoft has formed with the players of its current Xbox is much deeper than any relationship Microsoft has ever achieved before.

The new console the Xbox One will enter a market very different from the one its predecessor the Xbox 360 entered nearly eight years ago when there was no iPad smartphones had keyboards and mobile gaming devices were primitive at best.

Today video games can be played almost anywhere on any device with the biggest possible audience of online friends and without the aid of a costly gaming console.

The last year or two has been bumpy for Microsoft s consumer efforts. The Windows 8 operating system software and the Surface tablet computing devices got a tepid reception from the public when they went on sale last fall.

The company s mobile phone efforts have been largely ignored. And even Bing Microsoft s Internet search engine has failed to close a wide gap with Google the market leader.

Microsoft though could see better results with the Xbox. With it it hopes it can reassert the living room as the place where people can still get the best gaming experience complete with eye popping graphics and innovative methods for controlling games. It is also a place where Microsoft s technology can be at the center of a home entertainment system and the funnel through which people gain access to online video.

Microsoft has sold more than 76 million of the device s current incarnation the Xbox 360 worldwide compared with almost 100 million Wii consoles from Nintendo and more than 70 million PlayStation 3s from Sony.

The company also controls what may be the most valuable asset in console gaming Xbox Live a subscription based online service with 48 million members who use it to play games against one another and watch movies.

You can do a lot of things on the phone and a lot of things on tablets said John Taylor an analyst at Arcadia Investment. But he said you can t do the same kinds of things on those devices that you can on a television screen.

Microsoft plans to develop its own original live action television series which will be accessible through the Xbox. The series will be made in partnership with the director Steven Spielberg and will be based on the popular Halo video game franchise.

The company is also working with the National Football League to develop an app for Xbox that lets players interact with their fantasy football teams while watching a live game.

In an interview Don A. Mattrick the president of Microsoft s interactive entertainment business said that he recognized the growing appeal of mobile devices for gaming and that Microsoft would aggressively tie smartphones and tablets into the experience of using its console. He became most animated when talking about the possibilities of the new Xbox for providers of video programming.

We re going to the take the form from a one way experience pushed through a straw to where you can communicate back and make it interactive Mr. Mattrick said.

Even if it is a wild success the new Xbox is likely to have a bigger impact on consumer perception than it will on Microsoft s overall sales. The Xbox remains a small slice of the company s business which is still dominated by sales of Windows Office and other software. The company s games division represented only 4 percent of its operating profit.

At an event in a carnival tent on its corporate campus Microsoft did not say how much the new system would cost or how publishing partners would charge for games which typically start at around $60 for high end game consoles.

A major feature of the new Xbox which is expected to hit store shelves in time for the holiday season will be a new generation of Kinect the camera based motion control sensor introduced several years ago as an Xbox 360 accessory. The new Kinect will come with every Xbox One.

Traditional retail sales of games have come under pressure in recent years as mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad have invaded their turf with free and low cost games. While many gamers dismiss those offerings as inferior to console games the games have nevertheless tapped into a huge audience of players who may never have played on an Xbox or Sony s PlayStation.

The games business could use a jolt. Total United States retail sales of game hardware and software fell 25 percent to $495.2 million in April from $657.5 million a year earlier according to estimates by NPD Group a research firm. That figure does not include the sale of downloadable content over the Internet.

Alex St. John an entrepreneur who worked on Microsoft s pre Xbox game efforts says he is pessimistic about prospects for gaming consoles.

They re coming out with the latest and greatest stone tool Mr. St. John said. The new console that trumps the old console is called the Apple iPad. This generation of kids loves mobile games.

New Xbox and PS4 meet Call of Duty Ghosts

Editor's note John Gaudiosi is co founder and editor in chief of Gamerhub.tv video syndication network. He's covered video games for hundreds of outlets over the past 20 years and specializes in the convergence of Hollywood and games.

(CNN) While the gaming world is focused on the new Xbox One from Microsoft Activision is deploying its most popular franchise Call of Duty for its first assault on the next generation of consoles.

Developer Infinity Ward has designed new game engine technology to take advantage of Sony's PlayStation 4 and the new Microsoft console both due by year's end. Its Call of Duty Ghosts will come to PC Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers this November 5 with next gen release dates coming later.

In a recent interview in Los Angeles Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg showed off what next generation gaming will mean within the new Call of Duty game. Rather than continuing the Modern Warfare storyline the development studio decided to start from scratch with a new story and new characters.

Ghosts sets players in an alternate future America that's been crippled by a government in disarray. The Ghosts are remnants of the various branches of the Special Forces. They've adopted the best fighting techniques from these branches as they battle across an array of terrains and environments.

Also new to the franchise is an interactive dog which the developers created with the latest performance capture technology. The dog promises to be a loyal and important companion throughout the game's campaign.

This being a Call of Duty game there will also be new multiplayer gameplay to entice players to log in and take on friends from around the world on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Call of Duty Ghosts adds dynamic maps including natural events such as floods and earthquakes and player activated obstacles such as doors and explosive traps.

We sat down with Hirshberg to talk about what opportunities next gen consoles will open up for gamers. Here's an edited version of our interview

CNN What will define what next generation gaming is this fall

Hirshberg It's interesting. If you look into what's happened in culture not just in gaming but overall in culture over the last seven years that this current gen has represented the way that we communicate the way that we consume entertainment the way that we connect socially through digital spheres has completely transformed during that exact time period.

The current gen games like Call of Duty had something to do with that. They were the tip of the sword. Playing multiplayer in Call of Duty is probably one of the first mass things that people did together in a digital environment. Now we do almost everything together in a digital environment. All of those ways to connect with the devices in your pockets and being able to comment on everything categorize everything and rank everything hasn't really made its way into gaming yet.

We were ahead of the curve a little bit with Call of Duty Elite which we came out with to try to create a more social experience. One of the things you're going to see with next gen is that with Elite we were working around the current gen limitations in order to make a meaningful connection to the game itself. We had to find our way through an obstacle course technologically to make that happen.

Next gen is being designed with that in mind. There's really a baked in connectivity to the next gen hardware the way it's being conceived that I think will create many more opportunities for social connectivity surrounding video games.

CNN What will that mean to the community of Call of Duty gamers out there

Hirshberg We're seeing 40 million people a month playing Call of Duty. Six million people played today. This is 175 days after the launch of the last game. Anything that that many people do and care about usually there's a whole ecosystem of content to service their interest in that hobby.

They don't just watch a football game. They have a fantasy sports league. They have their favorite highlight shows. They have blogs that they read. They have statistics that they view online. They're connecting with that thing on multiple devices multiple times a day seven days a week not just when there's a football game on.

With gaming it's pretty much either you're playing the game or you're not playing the game and I think that with next gen you're going to see that ecosystem spread to different devices different times a day with a lot more supportive entertainment content for our franchises.

CNN When you look at past transitions to new consoles the focus has been on improved visual fidelity.

Hirshberg You're going to see that too. But to be fair last time it wasn't just graphical fidelity. It was the introduction of connected machines. It was the introduction of multiplayer through Playstation Network and Xbox Live. Games like Call of Duty took that and ran with it and there's a certain amount of humility we all need to have.

No one will see the future exactly accurately but the creation of those connected networks with the last generation of hardware created an explosion of new games with multiplayer and that's become the primary way people are spending their hours gaming. Next gen is always a combination of hardware design and ... what developers and creative minds do with that hardware. I'm just looking at the main differences and theorizing that that's where you're going to see an explosion of new creativity.

CNN What role do you feel Call of Duty will play in enticing gamers to upgrade to next gen

Hirshberg The game needs to be great but when you have a brand of the scale of Call of Duty that's so popular and so massive that it has the capacity to be one of the things that people really want to see. If you look at the last console transition the top franchises were the ones that bridged the gap between the last gen and the current gen and I think that will happen again.

We can't take that for granted and assume that people will show up just because it's a Call of Duty. It has to be a major game and it has to be demonstrative and emblematic of everything that the next gen is capable of and that's why we're putting this level of investment against it.

That's why we're not taking the easy route in doing a sequel to Modern Warfare. That's why we're opening up the franchise and removing the restrictions and doing all new characters and an all new world and taking a whole new approach to the game. We want to set the standard for the next gen.

CNN What are the challenges when it comes to this transition Call of Duty Ghosts is also coming out on next gen but the majority of gamers will be playing on current generation of consoles.

Hirshberg One of the decisions we made early on which was not a simple decision but we think it was the right one is that we have the same exact team developing the game for the current gen as is developing for the next gen. Some publishers have a lead developer doing the next gen game and then some outsourcing for the current gen.

We felt like it was really important to deliver what I think will be the best current gen Call of Duty ever because that game's going to benefit from all of the new thinking and all of the new ideas that are going into the next gen.

Some of the things from a technological standpoint won't be executable on the current gen like the Sub D and the texture mapping and that stuff but all of the gameplay ideas like dynamic maps character customization the new story the new world the current gen will be the beneficiary of all of those new ideas. I think it's going to be the best current gen game we've ever made.

CNN Traditionally with new hardware comes lower price points for current gen. How much life there is in the current gen systems moving forward given that PlayStation 2 had a very long tail

Hirshberg I try to not predict these things. What I know is we're going to have great games on every platform wherever our audience is. This has been Activision's philosophy for a long time. We've always been platform agnostic.

Wherever there are gamers that want to have a great experience we're going to have a great Call of Duty game for them we're going to have a great Skylanders game for them.

Even if the next gen is off to the races on Day One there will still be a lot of people who either are waiting to see or saving their money and who aren't going to dive in right away and we want them to have a great experience too.

Xbox One Microsoft unveils new console that changes everything

Microsoft revealed a new Xbox console on Tuesday that not only integrates TV internet and gaming but also will measure your heartbeat and recognise your voice.

The company said the Xbox One will revolutionise its users' lifestyles by integrating the cloud voice control and gesture technology into a simple intuitive machine.

It changes everything Marc Whitten an Xbox executive told a packed hall of technology journalists at the company's campus in Redmond Washington. This is rocket science stuff.

Analysts who had wondered whether the company could follow up on the success of its Xbox 360 first unveiled in 2005 said its successor offered a complete entertainment system designed for the family not just gamers.

The Xbox One really looks to advance the state of video game technology and entertainment in a way that we haven't seen before said Brian Blau a director of Gartner Research.

The Xbox One is a real advancement one that will transform the way we experience TV games music movies and more. From what we can see so far Microsoft has met and far exceeded expectations for the Xbox One. This is Microsoft branching out into the living room to reach more of a family audience rather than a core gaming audience.

Fred Huet a managing partner at Greenwich Consulting said Microsoft had thrown down the gauntlet to Sony's PlayStation and other rivals. The Xbox One is set to mark the beginning of a new generation of games TV and entertainment.

The Xbox One which will be available from the end of the year will be powered by 300 000 servers more than the entire world's computing power in 1999 said Whitten.

An improved ultra sensitive Kinect sensor will track wrist and shoulder rotations and be able to read users' heartbeats. This is human control for a human experience. Its main camera can record 1080P RGB video at 30 frames per second.

Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi wowed the audience by calling out commands and using minimal hand gestures to manipulate content on the Xbox One. He said a new set of universal gestures to control your TV would banish the fumbling confusion many feel with existing remotes. TechCruch called it a massive massive upgrade from the original model.

A snap mode similar to Microsoft Windows 8 experience allows users to run two activities such as watching TV and browsing the internet or using Skype simultaneously. It offers a second screen.

The Xbox One has 8GB of Ram along with a Blu ray drive 64 bit architecture and a 500GB onboard hard drive. Microsoft also unveiled a new version of its camera based Kinect system with better motion and voice detection. It showed how users can watch live sports on TV while getting updates on fantasy leagues on a split screen. In an effort to stay ahead of rivals Microsoft said new content for the popular Call of Duty game can be downloaded on the Xbox One before any other system.

Microsoft said more games would be shown at next month's E3 video game conference in Los Angeles.

The previous model the Xbox 360 was launched eight years ago and has been the leading games console for the past two years.

What You Guys Want From The Xbox Reveal

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past month you'll be aware that something of interest is happening later. Something we've all been waiting for for some time.
